Don’t Fall for these Safety Risks

9/27/2022 (Permalink)

As the season change from summer to fall also brings fire safety risks associated with fall activities. Here are some fire prevention tips you can follow while enjoying fall festivities.

  • Campfire Safety

According to the National Fire Protection Association, “Campfire accidents send thousands of people to emergency rooms with burn injuries every year.” Here are some tips you can use for safety around the fire

- If campfires are permitted, they need to be at least 25 feet away from any structure and anything that can burn.

- Watch children while the fire is burning. Never let children or pets play or stand too close to the fire.

- Always attend to the campfire. A campfire left alone for only a few minutes can grow into a damaging fire.

- Always have a hose, bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand nearby to put out the fire. Make sure to put it completely out before leaving the site.

  • Halloween

According to the National Fire Protection Association, “Decorations are the first thing to ignite in roughly 800 reported home fires each year.”

- When choosing a costume, stay away from long trailing fabric. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so he or she can see out.

- Use a battery-operated candle or glow-stick in jack-o lanterns. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution.

- Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.

- Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.

  • Burning Leaves Safely

One popular way to dispose of falling leaves is to burn them. This can lead to higher fire and burn accidents. Here are a few safe alternatives to burning your leaves and grass clippings.

-Recycling your tree limbs, grass clippings, leaves can be composted and mulches into landscaping material.

-Many cities and towns provide curbside collection of bagged leaves and yard waste. Check your local public works department on the designated days for these pickups.

-Another option is calling a yard waste/junk removal service. These services take the debris to a dump or recycling center.

Commercial Deodorizing: Keeping your Business Smelling Good

9/20/2022 (Permalink)

As a customer the first things we notice are how a business smell. Whether it be a restaurant, gym, retail store, office, the list goes on.  Businesses that are perceived as smelling good tend to have customers spend more time there and return to your business.

Identifying the source of bad smells is your first step to eliminating them. Once you identify the source you can deodorize and freshen.

Common Odor Sources:

  • Restroom Odors

One place we all recall are the restrooms. Despite your best cleaning efforts, bad smells have an impression on your business. A study by Initial Hygiene, shows 77% of customers leave with a negative perception of a place that has unpleasant restroom smells.

Mold and mildew can cause a musty or old house smell. First you will need to find the source of the mold in places such as walls, drains or areas of high moisture. Make sure to identify if the mold will need to be professionally removed first. If you can mitigate the problem yourself, scrub down the affected areas with a specific cleaner the best you can and ventilate.

  • Commercial Dumpsters

One common source of odors is garbage. Trash cans, dumpers and anywhere waste is disposed of. Trash cans should be emptied and disinfected regularly. Dumpster odors can consist of decaying food and other products. During the summer heat this can especially be prominent. So get ahead of the summer heat and treat your dumpsters with a deodorizing spray.

No matter the source of your persistent business odors, SERVPRO of San Marcos/New Braunfels have the training and equipment to identify and eliminate these offensive odors. By identifying the cause of the odor, and determining the conditions where it contacts surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace. The science of identifying and eliminating odors can be a tricky thing, so give us a call, and leave the odor removal and deodorization to us.

Pool Maintenance to avoid Water Damage

8/24/2022 (Permalink)

Owning a swimming pool can be a huge financial liability. Many pool owners know repair bills can spring out of nowhere and be expensive. Swimming pools have a lot of components and moving parts that can potentially fail and result in leaks, flooding, and foundation damage.

Pools should be maintained just like maintaining a vehicle. The biggest mistake pool owners make is waiting until its too late to replace a failed component or leak. An active leak can slowly break every part of the pool if given time to do so, in addition to eroding your landscaping. Chlorinated water will begin to damage metal and walls of both concrete pools and vinyl liner pools. A leaking pump can turn into a big break causing major flood damage to your home.

However, pools are a fun recreation tool and adds value to your San Marcos home. Keep your pool in top notch shape to avoid major property damage and protect your property value.

SERVPRO of San Marcos / New Braunfels is here to help when your San Marcos property has been damaged by water. Our dedicated team is always ready to take your call, 24 hours a day.

5 ways to prevent Vandalism and Graffiti from happening to your New Braunfels Commercial Property

8/22/2022 (Permalink)

According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the annual cost of monitoring, detecting, removing, and repairing graffiti damage has been estimated as high as $15 to $18 billion. Commercial properties and business can help reverse these numbers by following these 5 strategies.

  1. Anti-Graffiti Film

One of the most cost-effective ways to mitigate damage, anti-graffiti film is invisible after being installed and can even eliminate the need for a costly glass replacement. Products such as 3M™ Anti-Graffiti Films, can be removed and replaced quickly, and without the need to remove your windows.

  1. Impact Protection Attachment Systems

These offer the highest level of protection for glass and windows. This system attaches to the glass and window frame and prevents not only vandals and forced entry, but also other catastrophic events such as bomb blasts and earthquakes.

  1. Security Systems

Installing security cameras offers an extra level of surveillance to your New Braunfels business. The presence of security cameras can intimidate offenders from “tagging” a building but also will record the incident for investigation.

  1. Flood Lights

Another cost-effective method is the installation of flood lights. As statistics indicate graffiti vandalism often occurs at night, lights can add an extra layer of security to alert perpetrators that someone may be watching.

  1. Barriers

Building a barrier to protect the outside of your property, such as fences, or even plants like hedges and shrubbery. This will restrict access to the walls of a facility. The additional effort it takes to maneuver around these barriers often forces potential vandals to abort their efforts to cause damage to your business.

Need Vandalism and Graffiti Cleanup Services?

SERVPRO of San Marcos/New Braunfels will act quickly to remove vandalism and graffiti from commercial spaces. In addition to removing spray-painted graffiti from exterior walls, we can also clean driveways, walkways, metals, woods, glass, and masonry. Call Us Today – (830) 625-0578

Keeping Your Yard Storm Ready

8/22/2022 (Permalink)

As the summer months end and the fall begins this also means winter storms are headed our way. If you live in an area that is commonly affected by severe weather storms, then properly preparing your homes landscape is imperative. According the National Weather Service, storm damage causes nearly $15 Billion in damage per year. Here are some important tips for keeping your landscape storm-ready.

  • Trim Your Trees

Proper pruning is important to improve tree health and wind resistance. Removing dead tree limbs that are a hazard is one way you can prepare your landscape. This way the tree limbs can not break off during a storm and cause damage to your home or other properties surrounding the area.

  • Protect Potted Plants and Equipment

Move all potted plants and planters inside your garage or another protected area. If they are too big to bring inside, move them to a corner and tip them on their side if not heavily protected. Stow away any patio furniture, lawn equipment, and BBQ pits as well.

  • Inspect the Roof

Inspect your roof and note if there are any roof repairs in need, such as shingle replacement, patching holes, and securing loose object as soon as possible.

  • Prep your pool

If you have a pool or hot tub, cover it if possible before a storm arrives to prevent debris from entering the water. Turn off power to heaters, pumps, filters and lights in case of a power outage.

The best preparation you can do is keeping your family, home and yard safe during storm season and stay informed about potential weather threats. Stay tuned to local weather forecasts and community evacuation routes.

Employee Appreciation Fish Fry 2022

7/26/2022 (Permalink)

Last month, owners of SERVPRO of San Marcos/New Braunfels, Darby and Tammy Wright show appreciation to their hardworking employees by throwing a fish fry. Majority of the fish is caught in Alaska, where the owners then have it processed and shipped back to Texas.

This is an annual tradition for the owners and usually happens in June/July right before the summer heat in Texas.  Any extra fish caught and not used is given to the employees to freeze and store for them and their families.

This year, Operations Manager, Travis Wright helped prepare the meal and a few of the production team members lend a hand as well. The rest of the team enjoyed the sunny afternoon relaxing and conversating while waiting for the meal.

The SERVPRO of San Marcos/New Braunfels team is appreciative of these fish fry’s and brings them all together as one big family.

7/2/2022 (Permalink)

If you own a New Braunfels business, fire safety and prevention should be among your primary concerns. By knowing the causes of commercial fires, you can take proper precautions to prevent damage to your property.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the five most common causes of fires in commercial buildings are cooking equipment, heating equipment, electrical and lighting equipment, smoking materials, and intentional fire setting.  A few risks and ways to prevent these common commercial fire risks:

  • Cooking Equipment

This area doesn’t just pertain to restaurants but also healthcare facilities, educational institutions, offices, and retail stores. Flammable oils and equipment using gas all contribute to fire risks. Ensuring all people using cooking equipment are operating properly and have fire prevention training.

  • Heating Equipment

In the winter months all buildings require heat to stay comfortable. Heaters, furnaces, boilers, and radiators are all at risk of overheating. Regular inspection and maintenance on all heating systems can prevent malfunctions that can cause fires.

  • Electrical & Lighting equipment

Water is one of the most common damages that occur in homes and commercial businesses. There are many things to look for when it comes to water damage. One of those things is the category of water damage. The different categories of water refer to the source of the water damage and other potential contaminants, including what the water may encounter.

The IICRC (Institute of Inspections, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration is a procedural standard that defines the 3 categories of water.

Category 1 is the least severe and includes water damage such as broken pipes and water supply lines, sinks and bathtubs. This type of damage is considered less severe is that it involves “clean water.”

  • Category 2 water damage: Significantly Contaminated “Grey Water”

Category 2 water damage involves “grey water.” This includes water from appliances like toilets and washing machines. While encountering grey water may not be harmful, it is important to remove any affected items and disinfect completely, as the waste and chemicals in grey water may prove harmful down the line.

How often should you professionally clean and sanitize your Business?

4/19/2022 (Permalink)

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a best practice to prevent spread of  infections and diseases such as COVID-19, is to routinely clean and disinfect your business surfaces. Here are some differences on cleaning vs sanitizing your business:

  • Cleaning refers to the removal of dirt and germs. Cleaning your surfaces regularly will reduce the number of germs but does not kill them. Determine what your needs are for cleaning and how often the surface is touched. Prioritize cleaning surfaces at least once a day or more frequently in high touch traffic areas.
  • Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This step is generally done after thoroughly cleaning off dirty surfaces first. This will help further with lowering the risk of spreading germs and infections.

Many factors determine how frequently an office or building should be cleaned. These include the number of employees or the amount of foot traffic you get. Have your business cleaned professionally as often as your budget and schedule allow.

Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, our defensive pathogen cleaning program, goes way beyond standard janitorial cleaning practices. With over 50 years of experience in decontamination, you can trust SERVPRO of San Marcos / New Braunfels Professionals to bring a higher standard of clean to the places we gather.

If you have any questions about having your establishment sanitized, give us a call at (830)625-0578.

3 reasons why Spring is the most Volatile Season

4/6/2022 (Permalink)

Spring is known for its rapidly changing weather including severe flooding, major thunderstorms, big temperature changes and high winds. This is due to the battle between warmer air pushing forward and the last of the colder air plunging south.

Here are some facts and things to look out for during the spring transition.

  1. Tornado threats are higher

Tornado outbreaks are most often associated with the changing weather conditions in springtime. These increase around March and peak in April, May and even to June. Tornadoes are capable of tremendous destruction with wind speeds of up to 300mph! This can damage many structures through storm surge and rainfall caused flooding

  1. Spring Floods

Flash flooding is an increased threat in spring as thunderstorms are predicted at a higher rate. Thunderstorms can produce rainfall rates of more than an inch per hour. If heavy rain persists for several hours at a time in a particular area this can cause major flash flooding.

  1. Changing temperatures

During the spring transition from cool to warm weather the air around us heats up. When these two combine this causes the air to rise and moisture escapes in the form of rain and storms. This leads to a extremely wet spring. Towards the end of spring when temperature swings are less common, we see less storms and more warm weather. This is where we get the saying April showers brings may flowers!

SERVPRO of San Marcos/New Braunfels Owner Catches a 25 lb Blue Cat at Canyon Lake

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

Owner Darby Wright proudly holds a 25.10 lb. Blue Cat fish that was caught out of Canyon Lake in Texas

We love that our employees are able to enjoy hobbies outside of the workplace. One thing most of our team members have in common is the love of fishing.

If there is a fish to be caught, Owner Darby Wright is a pro at it. Darby is known for his fishing expeditions all over the world, but catching this local beauty is something to be proud of.

He was once again featured in Construction News, Ltd with a picture of his latest catch; a 25.10 lb. Blue Cat that was caught at Canyon Lake on rod and reel. This fish barely missed beating the existing lake record by seven ounces.

Darby recently harvested a huge hog on a hunting trip in Gonzales County that was acknowledged in the same article.

3 Helpful Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Comal County Commercial Kitchen

3/2/2022 (Permalink)

If you already started spring cleaning in your residence and are a Comal County business owner, now is the time to focus on the thorough cleanliness of your establishment.

4 helpful tips for you and your employees to utilize are:

  • Duct Cleaning - The oven extractor hood and ducting are key pieces of kitchen equipment that often build up grease and bacteria over time. That's where our trained technicians can offer assistance by keeping them clean to extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give your employees and patrons cleaner air to breathe.
  • Kitchen Floor Cleaning - A clean floor looks great, improves air quality, and can help prevent bad odors. Excess grease can be removed from floors. Our team specializes in taking care of hard floorings, like hardwood and tile, which is often used in today’s homes and commercial properties. At first glance, hard flooring appears to be easy to clean, maintain, and restore. However, these materials tend to have soil accumulate over time, and eventually, you’ll need professional cleaning to remove this buildup. We have specialized training in time-tested and industry-approved cleaning methods. Also, our proprietary cleaning system allows our Professionals to properly clean and restore your floor’s original beauty.
  • Oven, Fryer, and Grill - Ovens should be cleaned regularly, particularly if starting to smoke. Fryers and grills with too much grease build-up can become a fire hazard in your establishment. Something we see often and know-how every fire damage situation is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. When various materials burn, the soot they create differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. Being proactive with cleaning your oven, fryer or grill regularly could easily prevent any potential fire emergency.

Sometimes things get hectic with your business and you may not be able to perform the tasks needed to keep your kitchen space as clean as you would like. If you find yourself in need of additional spring cleaning support, SERVPRO of San Marcos / New Braunfels offers services ranging from cleaning restaurant hoods to removing biohazard contaminants. We have the specialized training and products to get your cooking area looking spotless.

Do You Know How to React to a Kitchen Fire in Your Buda Home?

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

Large flames are rising from inside a chrome pan on a kitchen stove burner.

Fire makes people react more frantic than any other emergency. However, if you are equipped with a few basic tactics, you'll reduce that panic and respond effectively if a kitchen fire were to happen in your Buda Texas home.

React fast:

  • Unplug the cord and use a dry chemical fire extinguisher or pour baking soda into the toaster if it's a toaster fire.
  • If it's a stovetop fire, turn off the burner and smother the flames by dousing them with baking soda or putting the lid on the pan.
  • If it's an oven fire, the most dangerous thing you can do is open the door. Just leave the oven door closed and turn off the heat to the oven. The fire will eventually smother itself.

The biggest mistake you can make is using water to put out a grease fire. It can splash the burning grease and cause burns. Another safety tip is never to carry a burning pan outside. It can cause a full-scale house fire if flaming grease spills and ignites something else.

Test Your Flood Knowledge

They are:

  • River Flood

How to Protect Your Personal Items During an Electrical Storm

2/12/2022 (Permalink)

There is a dark overcast above a residential area with lightning striking a home.

An electrical storm is a violent atmospheric disturbance in which air is highly charged with static electricity, causing a storm.

Although an electrical storm isn't the most dangerous of disasters, it can still cause a lot of damage to homes and start fires.

Start by Protecting Your Gadgets: Unplug computers and phone lines, and unplug corded telephones and sensitive electronics to prevent damage from power surges.

Don't Wait for Flames: Call your local fire department immediately if your home gets hit. Lightning strikes can cause small fires inside walls that smolder for hours before noticing anything.

Be Safe: Lightning may strike nearby electrical and phone lines and travel to your home. Avoid contact with electrical appliances and telephones (landlines). In addition, lightning strikes can travel through metal plumbing pipes. So avoid sitting on the toilet and don't shower or bathe during electrical storms.

Proper Landscaping Could Prevent Excessive Flood Damage to Your Residence

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

When preparing your residence for a possible flooding situation, most homeowners are more concerned about the interior of their property than the exterior.

However, landscaping should be a consideration, especially if you live in an area with a high probability of flooding.

Here are a few benefits of landscaping:

  1. Consider adding drainage next to your driveway through channel drains, pavers, or other landscaping-based solutions to avoid rainwater runoff on your paved driveway, which can increase your home’s risk for flooding. Two options are to add drainage areas near driveways by installing a gravel or spaced paver driveway.
  2. Planting new grass can reduce the impact of floods. The root structure of grass can help absorb water. It’s essential to research what kind of grass would be most effective for your region. Once it grows in, avoid cutting your lawn too short, which weakens the roots and can lead to flooding in your yard and possibly your home.
  3. Using mulch in the garden can prevent water from flowing toward your home. In garden areas graded away from your home, fill with a few inches of mulch. The mulch will help keep soil in place and hold in rainwater. If mulching near your home, make sure the mulch is at least six inches from your siding to avoid moisture wicking and rotting of your home’s exterior.

4 Common Causes of Water Damage to Your Comal County Home

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage affects homes on so many levels. When water creeps into your Comal County property areas where it shouldn’t be, your floor could warp. Water damage also discolors beautifully painted walls. All that moisture can also lead to the formation of mold inside the building and a vermin infestation. If water damage isn’t immediately addressed, it could eventually weaken the foundation of any building.

Blocked drains

The drains in your kitchen sink, bathroom floor, and bathtub clog up for many reasons. Hair, grease buildup, toiletries, dirt, toys, and other foreign objects could obstruct the drainpipe and prevent normal drainage. Clogged drains can easily back up and eventually cause flooding and water damage inside your property when not dealt with immediately.

Leaking pipes

A loose-fitting pipe in the kitchen sink could leak enough water to damage the cabinet underneath it. A broken pipe inside walls could make things even more complicated. The water damage such a leak can cause would be massive, as the entire wall would be water damaged, and it’ll foster the formation of a whole colony of mold.

Worse yet would be a leaking plumbing supply line or a drainage pipe in the soil underneath your concrete slab. When this happens, you’ll likely face costly repairs.

Condensation from AC

Your air conditioning unit produces condensation, with the moisture dripping from the unit’s evaporator coil into a drain pan and out of your property through a condensate drain line. This drainage system works until the drain pan is damaged or the condensate drain line is clogged with dust or dirt. With the water unable to get out, it will leak from your AC straight into your home. In addition, all that water dripping from your AC unit can damage the floor and walls and make your insulation soggy.

Malfunctioning sprinkler systems

Once activated during a fire, a sprinkler system will undoubtedly save your property. Unfortunately, there have been incidents where older sprinkler systems have turned themselves on even when there isn’t the slightest indication of a fire. As you can guess, the water damage that a malfunctioning or accidentally set off the sprinkler system causes can be considerable, especially with computers and other electronic appliances all over your property.

Benefits of Clean Air Ducts in Your Comal County Business

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

For many commercial property owners in Comal County, air duct cleaning is the last thing on their minds. But what most people do not realize is air ducts collect tons of dust, dirt, and debris over time, which can impact the cleanliness of the building and the health and efficiency of all the employees working there.

What are some of the benefits of having clean air ducts?

Boost Energy Efficiency

When the ducts are clean, the HVAC system does not need to use as much energy to maintain the temperature of your building, which saves you money.

Protect the HVAC Equipment

The airflow and the HVAC equipment in your building are inextricably linked. The dirtier your air ducts are, the harder your HVAC system must work to keep the building at a comfortable temperature. Since it takes more effort to complete its primary function, the HVAC system will encounter more wear and tear and break down more quickly. However, getting the ducts cleaned can help to lower future HVAC maintenance costs and ensure your system remains functional for a long time to come.

Decrease Symptoms of Allergies

Dust, dirt, and pollen can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks in sensitive people. Unfortunately, all these irritants and other airborne objects can get sucked into your HVAC system and remain in your air ducts. Commercial air system cleaning is essential to prevent these irritants from entering the workspace and reduce the risk of health problems.

Remove Lingering Odors

In a closed-off office building or warehouse, odors tend to linger longer than they should. The smells may result from anything from chemical solutions to exhaust from fans and machinery. Regardless of the cause of the odor, particles can get trapped in the dust and cobwebs located in your air ducts. By cleaning your commercial air ducts, you can also help get rid of any persistent scents that may be bothersome or harmful to your workers.

What sets us apart from other air duct cleaning establishments is our use of a protectant sealant that allows your companies air ducts to go a few additional years longer on having them maintained.

Our team will gladly work with your business of operation schedule to ensure your company receives our utmost customer service. Call SERVPRO of San Marcos/New Braunfels today at (830) 625-0578, and a representative will visit your facility to give an estimate on cleaning your air ducts.

What to Do When Your Commercial Property Experiences Damages from Lightning

1/6/2022 (Permalink)

Lightning strikes near a group of buildings in a city during a storm.

A commercial building structure is susceptible of experiencing storm damages at least once during its lifetime of being in business.

Business owners often take precautions against the wind and rain brought in by an oncoming storm. However, lightning poses a particular risk to small and large businesses—and since it travels over 100,000 miles per hour, your business can be damaged in the blink of an eye.

Lightning is simply a giant spark that moves within a cloud, between clouds, or between a cloud and the ground. As lightning passes through the air, it heats the air rapidly to about 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This causes a rapid expansion of the air along the lightning channel. This rapid expansion causes a shock wave that we hear as thunder.

One of the most common damages a building can endure is a fire from being struck by a bolt of lightning. A lightning strike can spark a fire upon contact with almost anything it touches, causing significant damage in a matter of minutes. In addition, this incident can leave a substantial amount of smoke damage to walls and flooring or water damage from firefighting efforts.

When this occurs, the first step is to contact your insurance agent to start the claim process then call on the fire and water damage restoration experts. Our SERVPRO of San Marcos/New Braunfels team will respond immediately to get you back to business to make things "Like it never even happened."
